Eastern Wing conquers again
By Biff Manstronoffik-- Jeddo Republican 10/10/89Heavy Metal music has become stagnant some may say.
But try telling that to the 10,000 or so kids who screamed their lungs
out last night to the Metal onslaught of Eastern Wing
Holding on to their origins as a Metal Band, Eastern Wing has
translated that genre's usual boringness into a jam-heavy, Prog-rock
mélange that was brave and very interesting.
Of course, the crowd, already primed from Eastern Wing's first
swing through the area last May, was riveted.
Due to the band's penchant for cover songs (like last night's
brilliant take on NIB), and deconstructing their own hits (like Smoke
The Filter/ Smoke The Filter Rap) into extended jam sessions, no
two concerts are alike.
The popularity of this band is all based on its live show. So, one
would think they would have a charismatic stage presence. That is an
understatement. Eastern Wing concerts sometimes resemble a three ring
circus with players running on and off stage and switching instruments.
Nevertheless, the extremely enthusiastic crowd cheered every Kevin
Bredbenner guitar solo like he was Jimmy Page. Which is kind of cool,
come to think of it.
Jeff Bonomo's singing voice was incredible when he wasn't behind the
drums. Kurtz and Hess were also golden in their vocal talents. The band
was in top form.
In the end, what the band has going for it are the intricacies and
subtleties of their live performance. Long live Eastern Wing.
